What is the meaning and where did the sand ceremony from the wedding?

I do not know where it comes from, but I saw a large family use different colored sand. Mom was sad and regular sand and children, parents, grandparents who had other colors, all different colors. The regular sand is poured into a glass container, then all other sand poured in as more turns, its supposed to remind you and your family that parents are the foundation, and children constitute the family, supported by in-laws, and people at the wedding.
